Decades of Housing Trends: A Visual Journey
The U.S. housing market has been a rollercoaster of upward trends and few declines over the past 75 years. Starting from 1951, we see a consistent rise in housing prices, with significant peaks in 1979 and 1980 reaching 13.7% and 14.6% respectively. This pattern of growth highlights the robust nature of the housing market, despite occasional economic challenges.
Interestingly, across the decades, there have only been seven instances where housing prices dipped. Some notable declines were during the economic struggles of 1990 and the financial crisis in 2008-2010, with the most significant drop in 2009 at -11.9%. Despite these downturns, the market rebounded, showcasing the enduring demand for housing. The forecast for 2025 also suggests continued stability with a modest increase of 1.4%.
